What makes UWB devices different from antenna design perspective?

Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) is a special technology used for high-speed, low power, short-range wireless communication, and positioning. It differs from many other technologies by spreading the signal over huge chunk of radio spectrum (split in 500MHz channels). Obtaining this kind of antenna bandwidth is obviously major challenge for antenna design. For positioning application both directional and omnidirectional antennas are needed depending on installation. Indoor positioning system is one example we have worked with.

In terms of UWB antenna design there are 2 special challenges:

1. Radiation pattern

Many antenna types work well with specified PCB ground size. However, if the ground gets larger radiation pattern starts to tilt for directional antenna or cause a null for omnidirectional antenna.

2. Group delay

For UWB to function as positioning system, there should not be changes at any frequency in group delay in respect to angle of arrival. Group delay gets easily distorted by poor integration or wrong antenna type.

We can measure TRP in anechoic chamber when your device has been configured to transmit carrier wave signal (CWS) at maximum power. This means that our power meter will test the transmitted power to each direction and results are integrated to generate the combined total power.
